Floreana is one of the Galápagos' most peaceful and fascinating islands, combining rich history, wildlife, and untouched nature. Explore its historic highlands, giant tortoises, black-sand beaches, snorkeling with sea turtles and sea lions, and its famous centuries-old mail tradition—all surrounded by beautiful landscapes and far fewer visitors.

If you're planning a trip to the Galápagos, I highly recommend spending at least one day on FLOREANA Island. It's an island full of history and nature, and it's much less touristy than the other inhabited islands. You can visit on a day tour or stay overnight—there are hotels on the island. The ferry departs from Santa Cruz Island.

The story of this small island is so fascinating that it inspired both the documentary The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden and the film Eden, which are based on the mysterious events that took place here during the 1930s.

In the highlands, you can visit the Pirates' Cave, the historic Asilo de la Paz (Peace Haven), and a semi-natural giant tortoise breeding center, where you can see giant tortoises that are part of important conservation efforts.

After that, head down to the coast to enjoy the beautiful black sand beach, relax with a drink at the small beachfront bar, and if you enjoy snorkeling, visit La Lobería, where it's common to swim alongside sea turtles and sea lions—and, if you're lucky, you may even spot Galápagos penguins!

There's also something that makes Floreana even more special: its unique mail tradition. At Post Office Bay, you'll find the famous wooden mail barrel, first placed there in 1793, where whalers used to leave letters for passing ships to deliver. In the town of Floreana, you'll also find a replica of the barrel, where you can leave a postcard without a stamp. Just write the recipient's name and address, and sooner or later another traveler will hand-deliver it, keeping this wonderful tradition alive for more than two centuries.

Beautiful sunsets, peaceful surroundings, and plenty of marine iguanas make Floreana an island you'll fall in love with.
